Bad Bad Happening Here

Went to give my sick Spice Finch his meds and make sure everyone was happy and settled for the night...

...and found BOTH the Spice Finch and the little B&W Mannikin dead on the floor of their cage...

...I hadn't checked them since yesterday at this time...they were both fine then...

I can see the Spice Finch having issues...esp. now that the lump returned...but other one? But I'm sure they were both fine...

...I have no idea...really...all my other birds are fine...no one used anything new in the house...plus I'm a bit of fanatic about that regardless...

I can't come up with anything...but obviously it was something that affected both of them...even if the Spice Finch died of natural causes...the Mannikin should have been fine...

I treated them for mites...but that was a over a week ago...they were due for a 2nd treatment...but not yet...

If I can think of anything...I'll let you guys know...if we did something wrong...hopefully no one else has to...

I need to go to bed...

This is very unfortunate. If you can swing it, necropsies might be your best bet for finding an answer. Either way, I'm sorry for your loss.

Thanks guys...

I spent the day wracking my brains trying to figure what it could have been...

...and nothing is panning out... :(

I didn't think of doing necropsy last night when I found them...too upset...and I put the bodies in the freezer...

 That's so sad Rue. You might still be able to get a visual necropsy done even though now they can't do any microbiological testing, you could call around. A gross necropsy might give a clue.

I am new to finches, but not birds- I am so sorry, just heart wrenching- i wonder- with the contaminants found in pet foods lately, could it be some sort of link there?

Thanks!

No...not teflon...no one had cooked anything for a couple of day

Unless there was something in the dregs of the bird seed...there was nothing they ate that was off either...and all the finches had eaten from the bird seed at one point or other...so I don't think that was it either...

hi rue
is it possible they could have picked up any mouse droppings ,as they resemble niger seed very closely and that particular seed is some birds favourite
