eggs in the hen cage???

Post by ac12 » Fri Mar 05, 2010 12:19 am

I don't know if this is the appropriate section for this question.

Today I found 2 eggs in my hen cage containing 5 hens.
So at least one of the hens is laying, but I have no idea which one(s), as I just found the eggs on the cage bottom and in the poop tray.

This may be as a result of hearing the gouldian chick begging to be fed for the past couple weeks.

As a precaution I put liquid calcium in their water and added more egg shell.

But now what is the drill?
I don't really want to put a nest in the cage, as that might trigger the others to want to breed. All my cages are occupied, and the only thing I can do is divide the cage, to split them and in that way narrow down on which on is laying.

I don't see a need to separate the hens. I have a cage of juvie hens up to two years old, and sometimes they will lay eggs. I just remove the eggs and give them some eggfood (which juvies need anyway) and calcium in the water.

Thanks Liz
I think that is what I will do.
Lot less work than trying to find the one that is laying the eggs.
