BLOOD on the perches :(

Post by ac12 » Sun Mar 07, 2010 3:46 pm

Yesterday I had a scare.
I saw a LOT of blood on the perches in the hen cage. A LOT more than just from an abraded bumble foot, and I had cleaned the cages & sanded the perches so there should not have been hard dried poop to abrade the foot.

I checked all the birds, one at a time.
2 had blood on their feet so they came out, got their feet cleaned and inspected, then put into a small hospital cage.
A little while later there was blood in the hospital cage. :(
I check and clean their feet again, can't figure which bird.
So I got another travel cage to separate the 2 birds, to narrow down which one is bleeding.
Then I spot blood in one of the cage...now I know which bird is bleeding.
I check its foot and toes...carefully. And I'm ticked off cuz I can't find my magnifying glass (my middle age eyes really needs magnification to see that small claw). I "think" the claw on one of its toes "somehow" cracked in half and it was bleading from the quick, or it was bleeding from around where the claw comes out of the toe. At least it looked like its claw was still in its toe. So I put some stop bleed powder on her toe w a Q-tip, and it looks OK.
Overnight, no more blood...whew...

I gave her NV powder in the drinking water and egg food to help get her blood and stuff back to normal.

I'm still puzzled at how the toe got injured.

Wow, sounds like you did everything perfectly, Gary! Excellent job all the way through. =D> I don't know how or why this would have happened either but you were quick to find and fix the problem. Best wishes for a full recovery and back to the BIG house. =D>

I only spotted the blood by chance as I glanced at the cages before getting ready to meet some friends for dinner. And I only saw the blood because there was so much of it on all the perches. If I had not detoured to look at the cages, I would not have seen her till this this morning, and she probably would have bled to death. She is a lucky hen.

What puzzles me is what happened.
I always want to learn to prevent a problem so it won't happen again. But I have no idea what happened to her toe. I need to get a magnifying glass so I can see that claw and toe. It is frustrating not being able to see that claw and toe.

Glad you found her before it was too late. Is it possible that she got her claw or toe snagged somewhere, and injured herself pulling loose. :?:

Janine

I know what you mean. I had a zebra get its toe stuck in the corner of the quarantine cage between the side and front sections of the cage. I rescued her before she hurt herself only because I heard an ODD sounding flutter coming from the bathroom.

I will have to look at the cage carefully tomorrow.
