Where to get Nystatin?

Post by 1of42 » Tue Mar 09, 2010 4:15 pm

I think that my finch is exhibiting signs of star gazing/twirling. Thus far I've provided food and water on the floor of the cage for him, but he can't get up to high perches or seem to fly and land very well. I am interested in trying the Nystatin procedure (either by mouth or water) outlined on FinchNiche.com, but does anyone know where I can get it? Does it require an avian vet or can you buy it from any specialty stores?

Thanks!
My flock:
  • Snow, white ringneck dove
  • Oliver & Laurel, green parrotlets

Nystatin is a human medication ( an anti-fungal ) u can find it in any pharmacy under the name of Mycostatin or Medistan.

Remember, it's a liquid you want. I read it comes in Cherry flavour... wonder how the finch would like that! :D

OK I'll be sure to look for the liquid. Hope he doesn't hate me for giving him this stuff! I just want him to feel better.

Don't you need a prescription for it?

I'm pretty sure the way I understood it is you need a Rx for Nystatin, which is why many people defer to using Medistatin which is powdered Nystatin available through certain online sites (never seen it in an actual store) like Bird Supply of NH, LadyGouldianFinch.com, etc.

Hmm OK if I can't find any Nystatin or similar tonight I suppose I'll order from LadyGouldianFinch...I suppose it's OK to give the powdered stuff in the food that he shares the with other finch in his cage? It won't hurt the healthy finch if he ingests some of it, will it?

I would separate the bird needing treatment.
Whether the med will "hurt" the bird is not as relevant as "Is it necessary to medicate a bird that does not need medicating?"
I consider medistatin to be pretty benign in terms of medications but I still wouldn't medicate a bird that didn't require it.

Well dangit it shows that they sell a 50g amount for $18.95 but when I add it to my cart it adds a 100g one at $38.49! Does anyone know where I can get a small amount of this stuff?

It worked for me - are you sure you added the 50g one?
Try again - it added the 50g to my cart when I tried :)
