I was looking at my birds today and noticed that when they were hopping around that the male, or I assumed male since that's what i was told, has no feathers on his/her bottom. Is this normal? Is it a sign that it's a girl and that all the feathers have been plucked for egg-warming or something? Or is this something I should be concerned about?

Anyone?

Is your bird bald around the vent? The brood patch is usually more on the belly/chest area, so I would watch to see if the bird continues plucking that area. Could be a problem that needs attention.

Yea, around the vent. I've never seen him pluck at himself so... i dunno.

Either the bird is plucking itself, or somebody else in the cage has pulled out its tail feathers and moved on to his butt. Either way, as Tammie suggested I'd watch him.

Have you thought to maybe taking him out and putting him by himself for awhile? That may give you time to see if it is the other birds bothing him, or a problem he is causing himself? Or if it is mites?

I have a mite thing that keeps mites away. So it can't be that. The other bird doesn't bother him. So I dunno.

Are you using the 8-in-1 bird protecter? When I first purchased my set up I also bought one of these. However, once I found this forum I read they can be harmful. I didn't have mine on the cage for long , so I can't really help on what type of illness it may cause.
