Another Cordon Bleu Question

Post by Sally » Sun Jan 06, 2008 8:34 pm

So I lost one of my BCCB males. My other pair of BCCBs was off the nest today, three eggs on the floor, and the nest is empty. Put the eggs back in, but they ignored them, so I put them in the Society nest--probably dead in shell, anyway.

Now I have three birds, and I'm starting all over. I have pulled their nests for now and just letting them regroup. I know you can't put two pairs of Cordon Bleus in the same cage, but would it be possible to put the male and two females in a cage together, or will the male chase off the extra female, or will the two females fight? I'm afraid it wouldn't work, but figured I'd ask and see if anyone has ever tried it.

I did try it with Strawberries when I got an extra hen, and my hen had been totally disinterested in the male, except as a buddy. I put all three in a cage, and the newcomer was the aggressor! She chased the hen, I removed the original hen, and she chased the male, so I gave up and took her out.

I don't know why I'm even asking, I know three is a terrible number when it comes to finches in cages, but I want CB babies so bad! This odd hen has laid plenty of eggs, but they were always clear, so I figured the male was at fault.

Sally,

First and foremost, I'm sorry about your loss.

The hens will fight, and breeding will be seriuosly impeaded.

Try to find a Male locally if you can. I'll check with Michele to see if she knows of any Cord breeders near you with birds available. We have a male, but it's been too cold here to send birds out. We'll see what we can do to help.

Thanks, Sean, I was pretty sure it was not a good idea. I'll just have to try to find a mate for my odd hen.
