birds wont eat

Post by iamtones » Fri Mar 07, 2008 9:44 pm

Hi all once again,

I am finding it hard to get my finches to eat my egg foods... I have a breeding pair of Zebras (Osirus and Isis) and a breeding pair of Gouldies'(Nickle and Dime) that will not touch the stuff, whether its some eggs that I have just boiled and crushed or pre-made egg biscuit mix from the pet store. I have even tried sprinkling a little bit of millet spray on top and other seeds to make it look more appetising but still nothing... Gusto the Canary in the other cage thrives on it...

Can anyone please give me some pointers on this cause the Zebras have just started incubating and i want them to get use to the food early...

Cheers

Gouldians are difficult when it comes to trying new foods. I have read that canaries are good teacher birds, I think TammyS has used them for this. Is there any way you could add the canary to the others cage? Or is there a veggie that they especially like? You could mix it in with the eggfood. My Goulds used to not eat eggfood, but now they devour it, I just kept offering it. I have read that you can take all sources of food out of the cage when they settle in for the night, then the next morning, you give them only eggfood, or whatever you are trying to get them to eat, and wait several hours before you give them back their seed, etc. This way they get hungry enough to try the new food. Let us know what works for you.

My goulds would never touch the egg food but when they went into breeding and especially when the chicks hatched they loved the stuff and consume it. You may just have to wait in time when it's right they'll accept it eagerly.

Thanks for the advice Sally and Chris... I finally got the Zebras to start eating some fruits n veggies, now its just the eggfood left.. Ill keep offering it to them for a few more days and if that doesnt work then Ill have to try putting the Canary in the cage.

Cheers
