Since I am just using the Societies as fosters, I use the enclosed nestbox with open half-moon front. These are the type that are plastic, can be cleaned in the dishwasher. They are meant to hang on the outside of the cage, with not only the top opening up, but there is a little flap that lifts up that lets you take a peek without too much disturbance. I am able to add eggs or babies easily, and I can take babies out to see that their crops are full.

ive found they will use anything, but are particularly fond of domed wicker baskets. i had a pair build their own nest once in an aviary and i swear it would have rivaled most weaver bird nests, it was almost perfectly spherical, tightly knit ball of straw and coconut fibres, the entrance was oval shapped and quite broad and had a loosly woven, downwards pointing entrance funnel made of straw and old millet sprey stems, loosely bound together with coconut fibers. it was lined with dried sphagnum moss and fethers

Wow that bird made nest sounds really interesting.
My societies are in a "tiki" style nest... It's kind of tear drop shaped and it has a grass roof and a small round hole. As the babies are getting much larger it's getting to be a bit small. I think next time I will go the nest boxes on the side of the cage.

I think both TammyS at JustBirdStuff and fairestfinches carry that nestbox. It can't be hung on the inside of the cage, as the hooks are on the front of the nestbox. On my 30x18x18 cages, I wanted to hang the nestbox on the front of the cage, but the door is bigger than the nestbox. I just took a plastic plant and stuffed the rest of the opening with it. It should be just the right size to hang on the breeder doors at either end.
