Just an update on the baby Gouldian who was being fostered!!

Post by oversweet10 » Sat Jun 07, 2008 5:00 pm

Well a lot has happened since the baby Gouldian who was being fostered by the white zebra pair was a few days old... He/she is currently 1 month and 1 day old.

Since my last post I had been having to handfeed him "Kaytee Exact" in the morning and about every 3-4 hours. Then on June 1, 2008 I put the Gouldian baby to get used to the the Gouldians on top of the cage. I read it was important for “imprinting.” And the funniest thing happened. He started begging for food and the biological mother started feeding him! She had never really even seen him before then. It’s been a week since then (June 7, 2008) and now he is permanently with his “mom” and she is feeding him on a regular basis. I do not handfeed anymore at all. :) Isn't that crazy!? I had never heard of something like this happening... Let me know what you all think. :)

Thats pretty awesome that she started feeding him after not being with him all that time. i had some very young black cheeks that i brought home and as soon as i put them in the flight the started begging for food and like 5 or 6 finches came down and started feeding them.

That is so neat!! In all my reading I have never heard of a Gouldian doing this. :) They have a bad reputation for parenting and all... :)

That is neet and I have heard that before form other gouldian breeders. I had one gould that was a runt in a nest of 5 and he couldn't fly to the parents to beg for food so one of the siblings came down to him and fed him...go figure. Likely that these goulds will be good parents when they are older.

Really, wow!! I have never heard of that before. :)

I wonder what "clicks" in them to make them be good parents later on... Maybe they are just lazy. :)

That is wonderful that Mom finally started taking care of her baby--maybe she will turn out to be a very good parent next time.

yippee! There is nothing more thrilling to watch than a mom feed her baby especially when your concerned about it. There is always something
new happening to we have never seen before with these birds. That is what I LOVE about it.
