Post by superfly1977 » Mon Nov 03, 2008 11:37 pm

what do i need to hand feed a finch if the parents leave the nest to start over? do i leave the babies in the cage with the nest box and hand feed them in the nest box and put a heat lamp on them to keep warm and maybe a soc. finch will take over?

do i take them out of the cage for good intell they are older and put them back?

if i leave them in the nest box do i take the hay out put a towl in the nest so the heat lamp do not start a fire or will the hay be ok?

what heat lamp do i use and what bulb

what do u use for all of this trying to cover all of it. hope i do not have too

thank you

There is an article on handfeeding at the Finch Information Center, linked at left--it is under Breeding. It will explain what you need to do. It is very time-consuming and difficult to handfeed finch babies.

Handfeeding a finch is really hard work and I would really discourage you from doing so. Try to refocus the parents' attention to the clutch perhaps there is just too many nesting sites in the cage for them and they are starting again. Sometimes the pair may continue to feed the first batch when dealing with the new clutch. So you really need to see what they are doing. If they are society or zebra finches they would probably be fine.
