Totally confused about breeding

Post by mychocolabs » Sat Nov 15, 2008 1:14 pm

I am very new to finches, I have 5 females and 2 males in one aviary. The person who gave these to me said they were laying and hatching all the time they were moving out of state and did not want to take them along. They are laying eggs like crazy, unfortunately I have had no babies. I have 4 nests in my aviary, only 3 of the nests are being used.

How do you guys keep track of your eggs, when layed and how long to keep them???? I know that these eggs have been in the nest for at least one month, so according to what I have read none of these eggs are going to hatch. I've tried to candle the eggs but I can't see anything in them.

I also have a pair of society finches that I believe are both females and they are laying most of my eggs, however they are sharing the nest, I have thought that they were incubating the eggs because one of them is always sitting on the nest but I know that those eggs have been in that nest for at least a month. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of finches are they? If the society finches are both female, then the eggs would not be fertile. They will lay eggs without a male.

How big is your aviary? Most eggs will hatch in 12-15 days.
