Hi Christopher,

From your comment it sounds like you might think that most of us are having nothing but problems with our birds. :(

I guess on a forum like this it might appear that way, but I'm sure that manyof us here have many birds that we've had for years, that breed with no problems, and have long lives, as healthy as we can make them. But of course when things are going well, people are less likely to post here. They post only when they have problems... Doesn't mean that this is the case with most of their birds.

Partly because we ask questions here, we're able to offer healthier diets than birds used to get back in the days of seed only diets. I hope you weren't feeling defensive after your comments on making money with your birds. I don't think anyone here meant to accuse you of not caring for your birds. We wouldn't be here in the first place, and neither would you I wager, unless you are trying to do the best for them that you can.

The fact that you can make enough money from your birds for them to pay their way is terrific! I would think the best way to ensure you have a market for your birds is to make sure they are healthy. So don't feel you need to be on the defensive here. If you're here, we already know you care about your birds.

Hi Franny,
I’m not feeling defensive in the slightest and I’m sorry if it came off that way. As long as my birds are healthy and breeding I know I’m doing the right thing.

Sally thanks for clarifying the finch mill stuff. I guess you are talking about retailers. There are a lot of bad ones out there. But that just shows us that we need to help each other and promote the buying of birds directly from breeders.

Glad to hear that. I feel the same way. Birds are not like puppies, I think, in that in order to get them to breed in the first place, most finches require ideal conditions. We all no dogs will breed anytime, anywhere! :)

I'd like to be able to buy from breeders, but I need to know where they are. I think a lot of hobby breeders in my neighbourhood don't have websites. I found one quite by accident, at a local bird mart. It was not well advertised, and I happened upon it by accident. I found a breeder there who lives just a couple of miles from me and who has parrot finches. Up until I "happened" upon him, I was only able to find them online in Ontario! Since I don't have a car and live 2 hours from an airport by bus, shipping was not an option.

From what I've seen on here, a lot of people like myself, had to go to a pet store to get in to birds, since we didn't know where else to find them. (I rarely see birds on Craigs list in the vancouver area). It would be nice if more of the smaller breeders were able to advertise on the web, so we would have more choices.

Hi B Camp,

Had never even looked at Craigs list until I saw how much the birds were at the pet store, and my sister suggested it. I just checked the "Pet" section. Never thought to do a "wanted" ad! Will definitely do that should I find room for another cage. I'd like to be able to shop around if I'm lucky enough to be able to eventually get those tri-color finches or the gouldians! Finances won't allow it for now though.

I did find that lady who does the nail trimming though! Yeah! She's coming in 2 weeks to do my GBs. :D Haven't got the nerve to do it myself. I gathered when we spoke that she mostly does hookbills, but was willing to do my finches, too. I'll ask her when she comes if she knows any breeders, thanks.

In the UK we're lucky to have a guy called Chris Iles who started a site for those seeking to buy or sell birds.
He has a very good name here and the service is completely free.Chris makes sure that conmen don't get to advertise on the site.
Shame you don't have a similar honest set up in your country.

Thanks, I will., if I can't get any through this breeder I found. Wish we had a good site to advertise birds for sale. Craig's list says that it's supposed to be for adoption only... there's no legit' site for selling the babies like the one Poohbear has in the UK. This was my first time on Craig's List, so no problem, but if I was to breed a second clutch and put it on Craig's list I could get flagged.

But now that I've found a breeder near me, I can always contact him to see if he's interested next time. Maybe we can do a trade, or he can take a whole clutch in exchange for a parrot finch, as they are worth more than the GBs. Will definitely go through a breeder next pair I get. :)

in Australia we have a site on which people can list for sale or wanted birds. it keeps them listed for seven days, only hassle is you have to search through the lot to try and find anything in your area.

Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.
