red-browed firetail

about five days ago I had some red-broweds fledge.Only had two young last season after quite a few years with none.So pairs are getting a little long in the tooth.This year the same pair have 6 young out of nest from 5 days ago still alive and going strong.I currently have a few fives going in gouldians aswell.Heres a picture of mum and four of the chicks.Thanks to my better half.Know she has to teach me how to put in pictures.

congrats Gomer. from what I have heard they aren't an easy species to have success with. certainly are worth persevering with though. they are a permit bird I believe?

Beautiful ! I saw some of those at the last bird mart in Atlanta.

Almost bought some but need to get some babies out of there first.

Yes they are a licenced bird Mick.They are not that popular because of there monetary value.To many are taken from the wild ilegally.This also why they are difficult to breed for most people.No doubt some I have purchased have possibly been taken from their native habitat.

Up until 1999 you needed a licence to keep and breed basically all Australian birds,Except budgies and cockatiels.And you could only sell to another licence holder.From about 1999 approximately 6 of the 18 Australian finches were taken of the Licence,So that any one could keep those six.The amount and type do vary from state to state but are basically the same.The licence holder has to keep accurate records and can be inspected at any time by government agency's.(another revenue raiser)On the same licence you can keep many other Australian fauna.Yes the red browed is on the licence in Victoria,As it is common in the wild here.It is supposed to stop people from illegal trapping.it doesn't though,Maybe slows them down.That's why apart from zebies they are about the cheapest finch in Victoria,Approx $40 a pair.
