Hi Everyone.
I have just been offered this Breeding Cabinet for $100 ( Australian )
It seems to be in good condition, and is only a few suburbs from where i live. it has metal pull out trays and both walls can be taken out to make long cages, comes with the stand. Do you think this is a good price? should i get it?.
im thinking along the lines of if i buy it, i can use it for the 09 breeding season, and if all goes well it would have payed off its self with Young Gouldians flying around.
What would you guys do.
Jarryd

For about 40 quid....I'd get 'em. Proper breeding cages those.Pity they haven't any nest box doors on the fronts...One of those would allow you to set the nest box on the outside.
Give you a tip with wooden cages...get some decorators filler and with your finger wipe along all the cracks and joins inside...then paint over with vinyl emulsion. This makes sure if you ever have mites the little beggars have nowhere to hide and breed.
Looking more closely...have the ends been cut out to accomodate nest boxes??

I paid $50 for a nine pen cage. Not half as good as that.I got it cheap I thought.I only have a few budgies in mine.I personally prefer to keep finches in a outdoor aviary as here the weather does not get cold enough. But each to there own.Would be good for someone with no room for aviary or perhaps other reasons.

Gomer. i was thinking along the lines of having the flexibility of holding birds/bonding them. as you know i purchesed 6 metal cages recently. and now if i choose to get these 6 cages i can then set up both in my 2 aviaries. allowing me to try and bond the goulds i would like to breed together. Iv seen these breeding cabinets sell for alot more. so im really giving this a good thought.
thanks for your input

A lot of breeders over here paint their cages a light green...they reckon the birds prefer it.
Don't think it makes a difference myself...but each to their own.
Hey Gomer...I would have my birds in outdoor flights too...If I had your space...and weather
PS....It was minus 6 here last night

You look a bit cold Paul.
If i lived where some of you guys live.I know I would have a bird room, full of cabinets.and small flights. And be getting just as much enjoyment from the little guys.

great cages, hope you are able to get them.
how the hell does anyone or anything survive when it is that cold.
I thought the english were crazy when I visited there years ago. they were all wearing summer clothing while I was wearing all the winter stuff I could fit on. it was the middle of your summer and I was freezing my ass off.
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

LOL
MickP......you just have to wait until your skin gets tougher and you have your "winter skin" on. And drink lots of hot chocolate with a drop or two of spirits.

I went to Brasil a few years back in the summer (which was their winter).
Went to the beach in Rio and no one was in the water and people were walking around in sweatshirts. I wanted to get in the water. it was only 70 degrees...... good grief!

I'd just use a vinyl/emulsion...easy to use, quick to dry, and wipeable.
In England we don't have the temperature extremes and snowfall of some parts of the world...But our winters are cold and damp and seem to go on forever...even worse in Scotland. No wonder highlanders were a fierce race...wandering around in a freezing land full of thistles wearing skirts and no shorts

...And that was the men

...enough to make anybody warlike

You might want to consider a waterbased Verathane, it now comes in colours. It seals really well, and is totally non-toxic when dry.

I come from that stock, but I guess the relatively mild winters of the Pacific Northwest have brought out my more peaceful nature.

1 quaker, 5 cockatiels, 4 parakeets, 2 Java sparrows (1 fawn, 1 normal), 1 white gsd, 1 dwarf/rex mix rabbit, 5 chams, 1 sav. monitor, 1 beardie, 1 community fish tank, 1 praying mantis :3
