Shafttail Juvie question

Post by tidnab42 » Sat Dec 20, 2008 11:22 am

I have a lone survivor shafttail chick that is being fostered by my societies. (Long Story) Anyways there is only one society baby and one Shafttail baby. Now I've never seen shafttail chicks before, but is it possible to get a parsons shafttail from parents who are both the grass finch shafttails? I don't see a baby grass finch shafttail that looks like mine. Mine definately has a BLACK beak. Now maybe the coloring begins later, but it's been a few weeks out of the nest and I don't see it changing colors yet.

Sorry for such a stupid question, I suspect I'm just not seeing any color changes yet, because I don't own any parson's finches and the parents of this chick are unknown because it came from a aviary with all shafttails. (none that are parson's)

Thanks for any word.

The red beak can take many weeks to appear...

The normals (Shaft-tails) have black beaks and feet, while the fawns will have brown beak and feet. You'll see their colors slowly change in a few weeks...right around the same time as their moult.
