Question???

Post by twhyde » Sat Dec 20, 2008 3:53 pm

I have 4 baby Gouldian Finches - they have just been out of the nest about 2-3 weeks. I have leg banded them with numberd bands so I can tell them apart because they all look the same at this young age. But, my question is I saw #2 hopping and bobbing his head and doing the Gouldian dance. I am assuming that means #2 is a male - right??? He was doing it to his father - so he obviously does not know what it means. Just thought that babies that just hatched less than 6 weeks ago this was very soon to see this.

Thanks,
Terry

yes, he is a male. My gouldian juvie cocks are doing the same thing to their faher. You should also be able to hear singing very soon.

I am fairly new at this also and I had to ask the same question a while back.

Actually the juvenile goulds may just be copying the parents and this is not a good indication of sex in goulds. Now if he sings than it is more likely that it is a male but I have been fooled many times only to guess the wrong sex until they molt out.

Thanks Donna & Chris for your reply. I did actually hear the baby sing just a few minutes ago. So, I guess it is most likely a male. I just thought 5-6 weeks was very early for this activity to start.
These are my first babies and have no clue what to expect.

I have a baby Gould right now that just started singing at about 6 weeks old and I already can tell his colors coming in. I do think that is pretty young though as one of my Blue Goulds didn't start singing for quite awhile. I swore he was a female for quite some time. I think they molt and sing at different times as I have had some do it quite late and some who do it quite young. Good luck with them!
