Here we go again....what to do?

Post by dfcauley » Sun Jan 04, 2009 9:43 am

This morning when I went to feed my birds I peeked into a nest while the courdons were eating. I have three eggs that hatched. Wasn't expecting that. I knew they had laid some eggs, but it seemed they weren't sitting on them.

I have give this bccb three chances to raise its babies. I start back to work tomorrow and will not be able to monitor their feeding them. Their record is not so good. I do have my society finches prepared and ready and I know they will raise them. Should I go ahead and give them to the societies? I really doubt they will have a chance otherwise. What to do......what to do......

Donna....I think you just answered your own question

Put them in with the Societies....they have the best chance with them and you will have peace of mind while you are back to work. :D

I understand your dilemma of should you give the eggs to the Societies to be sure they hatch or should you let the BCCB's keep them and hopefully 'this' will be the clutch they get right for the first time.

I think it depends on how badly you want BCCB babies. If you really want them - then give the eggs to the Societies. Since you were expecting the eggs now anyway - you could leave them with the BCCB's for more learning on their part. It's a tough call.

Well the eggs have already hatched out.

I went ahead this morning and put them with the society finches. There was no one in the nest with them and I can't let them starve like the others. These were unexpected and I really did not want anymore babies since the aviary has gotten so full here lately with all the gouldians. But what can you do?

All nest are down except for three and they have either babies or sitters in them. After that all nest are down. We all need a rest.
