Post by chrischris » Wed Jan 07, 2009 7:52 pm

What is the largest clutch your Gould has produced and how many survived?

My first clutch just fledged about 3-4 weeks ago and there were 5 eggs - all 5 hatched and 4 survived. These same parents are now sitting on 6 more eggs.

WOW Donna all survived. Just want to know if the parents were new at it or were they old pros at chick rearing? Just that I now have a young pair with a clutch of 7 fertile eggs and want to know if I should be doing anything different other than providing it with lots of soft foods? The eggs are due to hatch in 1 week.

This is cheating, but last season, I had two hens sharing one nest, and they had a total of 13 eggs in the nest. Eleven hatched. But then I came home to find 7 dead tossed babies. I put the four survivors with Societies. Back to your birds--7 is a big clutch, but the pair should be able to handle them. If this is their first clutch, just keep an eye on them.

Chris,

This was their second clutch and they had help feeding them by another male gouldian that would go in and feed. He has done that twice now. He wants to be a dad and is practicing. Let me say that the last three just fledged yesterday so we are not out of the woods on them yet.

ahhhhh spoke too soon. I came home today and one of the last three that fledged had drown. I don't know....... I have water out for them to bathe in and it's not over an inch deep. But that is where I found it.

Heartwrenching! The other two that came out at the same time are very, very small compared to the others. One is a dilute and the other is a yellowback. But they are feeding them, so hopfully they will be okay.

So sorry to hear that, Donna. I've heard of hatchlings drowning when tossed or falling out of nests, but I didn't realize it could happen with fledglings.

I am always so careful that there is never any water under or near a nest of hatchlings. But these babies were fairly smaller than their siblings and not quite as strong. They weren't flying so well so I guess it just went into the water and couldn't get out.

I was sick about it.
