BCCBs

This male has finished his free standing nest in the bush. He obviously knows how to impress his lady.

The Blue-capped lady should really appreciate his efforts! Many of the waxbills are quite talented at building nests.

They are Blue-capped Cordons.

I agree with Sally. Almost all estrildids are instinctively great nest builders. I noticed that they feel safer in the free-standing nest than in the baskets, boxes etc.

Yea, I just noticed that your post was titled BCCB's after I posted

Is this nest in an outdoor aviary? It looks like blue skies in the background.

Ivann do you have white feathers on offer in there with them? That is their favourite. The hen and cock take it in to line his nest out with. Holding thumbs they not only like the nest, but put it to good use with lots of babies!

Most of my waxbills use a few feathers crossed across the entrance to shield the nest when they busy. Curtains is you wish, and also an early trigger should someone come through the entrance.

Brilliant nest!! I've been watching my 2 pairs build nests and so far they are also doing a good job of it, although a tad messy. Both pairs have bonded and have been seen mating, so I am holding thumbs!

Hopefully I will get mine to breed as well as yours do for you :D

The nest is lined with white feathers, but they rarely cover the entrance while they're sitting in it.

Rox

Good luck, Rox! They have a bad reputation as notorious tossers and nest abandoners, but I've never experienced so.

=D> fantastic Ivann. I had them many years ago. I clearly had a bunch that were part interior decorators!

Ivann 97@monotwine thanks to both of you!! The hens I know are young (approx. 1yr old) but not sure about the boys. But we will see :)

Ivann, I'm so glad to hear that your pairs don't toss. They really do have a terrible reputation from all that I have read.
