Zebras not being parents HELP

Post by Carlisle » Sun Jan 17, 2016 3:52 pm

My zebras decided not to lay on their eggs anymore. One of the males got angry and kept fighting away the female from the nest. both females would lay on the eggs but he kept them from it. After a ton of fighting and pecking I took the pairs out. They were all in rough shape. I have society finches... will they take over the egg laying? I know they are great with taking in already hatched birds and becoming their parents, but what about eggs that are still being incubated? Any tips? I am not set up to incubate them nor can I afford (time/money) to do it myself.

Societies are good for sitting on eggs, when they ALREADY have eggs and you switch them out.

They are lovely, but not fool-proof. If they havent laid an egg, they may not sit on it. Depends on your society finch.

Since they sleep in the same nest at night you can trust the societies will keep them warm overnight, while sleeping....but I cant guarentee they leave the eggs the next day.

Elana can point you in the right direction as per the zebra situation. I dont raise zebras. Separating ALL the zebras might not have been the best option.

How long have the Zebras been sitting on the eggs? And how long have they been off the eggs now?

If your Zebras were incubating, and are now off the eggs for any length of time (as in eggs have grown cold), then the odds of those eggs hatching are not good.

In a situation like the one you describe (male chasing females off the eggs), I would remove the male into a separate cage. Females, can Incubate, hatch, and raise chicks on their own (especially if you have more than one female in the nest).

Regarding Societies and eggs: As Babs mentioned, Socies will readily foster other species' eggs, if they are already on eggs. If they are not on eggs, then it's iffy.....

Good luck.
