My society stays inside the nest in the day?

Post by MalditoGorrion » Mon Jan 12, 2009 4:00 pm

Hi

One of my society’s couples is spending so much time in the nest during the day. They already had babies that eat by themselves and are in other cage. The male started the construction of the nest 3 weeks ago but there is no egg and I see that the female spend a lot of time inside (some time both). I ask you this because I never see my birds inside the nest for so long time during day hours and they are in a big delay to start a new clutch (they usually lay eggs faster after a clutch). What do you think? Is this normal? Thanks

Maybe she's just tired. How many babies did they have last time? Are you wanting them to have the second clutch right away? A little break might just be all she wants. If you're feeding them eggfood, etc. she should get the idea to start laying soon. Guess you just can't rush a woman!

Hi franny

Well she only breeds 2 babies this time. I am feeding them with egg food all the time, cuttlebone and spray millet. I am not in a hurry to have a new clutch but it is strange for me that if the male made the nest she doesn’t lay eggs. If she is tired do you think is a good idea to separate the couple for 2 weeks or so? to give her some time?

Societies love spending time in nests, day or night. I wouldn't worry too much nor separate the pair, let them start a new clutch when they are ready. Good luck

Ty friends. Today I cheeked the nest and I found an egg. I was worried because I never see both inside the nest at same time during the day but its seems that she is laying eggs again :P .

See, just be patient. The birds know what they are doing. Good luck and keep us posted.

Great to hear new eggs are on the way. Society finches do love being inside the nest A LOT. Mine hung out more in the nest than outside during the day w/o eggs. That's just how they are. Very relaxed birds.

Im glad to hear Societies like being in the nest!
We have a pair that is sitting on eggs....
if they dont hatch by next week Im assuming they are not fertile as it seems like they have been in there for too long as it is.

It seems like the NEVER come out of the nest, if they do its one at a time and only for short spurts!
Was not sure this was due to the eggs or if that was their nature.
