Owls!

Post by kczgyrl » Sat Mar 26, 2016 7:51 am

I am happy to report that 3 out of 4 owls have hatched! How long should I let the 4th egg stay in the nest? It has been 17 days since incubation.

I just leave unhatched eggs in the nest with the chicks. They serve as hot water bottles for the little ones.

Congratulations on the new babies!

Keep offering live foods and eggs, so that the parents never run out of baby food.

Owl babies, are the cutest :D .

Inexperienced parent owls can be temperamental, my 3 experienced pairs all failed on 1st 2 attempts at rearing last year until i finaly got routine right probably mainly to do with minimizing nest checks, the same 3 prs fledged 12 chicks between them on 1st attempt this season and are currently sitting tight on 2nd round of eggs.

I wouldn't be checking the nest any more if i were you until chicks are about 6-7 days old ready for banding, the remaining egg will most likely still hatch if viable. At this stage with newly hatched chicks parents should still be in nest constantly until the're about 8-10 days old.
