Re: PICTURES! Baby Zebras, newly fledged
Chrismurdoch3 How do I know if a penguin female is split to black cheek? If its just in her genes then I wouldn't know, she was pet store bought.
In the first picture the baby at the front has white cheek patches and the baby in the background has grey/no patches. I assume the background one may come normal with orange then but what about the white cheek patches of the other?
How would I replicate the black cheeks?

Re: PICTURES! Baby Zebras, newly fledged
I'm trying to think about the white cheeks...I'im pretty sure that the baby with white cheeks is a penguin or pied. I know a lot of my penguins that I bred came out looking like that and then they molted out and looked a lot like your female does. This baby in particular might not show the full penguin colors or traits because your male is black cheek and not penguin by appearance. I'm assuming that your male probably is carrying the pied gene since the baby came out with white cheeks.
The only way that you can tell if your female is split to black cheek without knowing her back ground is to breed her. if she is split to black cheek and you put her with a visually black cheek male (which you already have done)
So if she is split to black you should get I think it's 25-50 % black cheek babies. The good thing about black cheeks is that the babies come out of the nest with black cheeks they don't molt into them and both the male and females have the black cheeks.
So since none of your chicks have any black cheeks this round I would give her a couple more tries and if you don't get any black cheek babies I would say it's safe to say that she isn't split to the black cheek gene. But all of your babies will be split to black cheek even though you won't see the black cheeks visually.

Chrismurdoch3 I'm enjoying this couple. They make pretty babies. It's interesting about black cheek babies coming out the nest with the black cheeks already showing. So if I want BC babies, I need to find another BC female or split to BC female. Hmmmmmm, more zebra shopping is it hehe

Re: PICTURES! Baby Zebras, newly fledged
I got two white babies from a penguin mum(plus a fawn and three greys) They did seem more vulnerable than the greys at first but have come on well. Just waiting to see how many boys and girls I've got now. Wish I could get pictures but they won't keep still and being outside, I dare not leave the door open.

Yes that's correct, or you could let this pair go another round and see what the babies are. That should give you enough info to see if she is split to BC or not.Animalzoo wrote: Chrismurdoch3 I'm enjoying this couple. They make pretty babies. I personally think that the BC zebras are very attractive and I have bred them for years.

Chrismurdoch3 Agreed, I like the bc zebras a lot. I will definitely let this couple go again, rest and again. I like their offspring and to observe they are very pretty. Thanks for your help.

I love to watch the breeding raising process. Going from an egg to a fledgling to a molted juvenille.lovezebs wrote: Animalzoo
They are super adorable. Makes one almost want to set up a pair of Zebras, just to get some cutie babies like these..... I said 'almost ', lol.
It is dealing with the molted adult zebras that drove me nuts.
I gave Lori my flock of zebras, when I shut down my zebra breeding.
Now, I have only ONE penguin zebra.

ac12 I'm with you on that one Gary. These younglings are just starting to change colour and molts will begin imminently. I can hear the odd squabbling begin already! They're lovely but boy can they bicker hehehe
ONE penguin left....hmmm go on, you know you're tempted lol

Here are some more photos of the family in their new digs! It's bigger than what they had before and will do in the meantime until the babies go.
Dad, the BC male on the right and mum is the penguin second along on the left.

The 3 on the far right are the babies and you can see the fawn foster baby in between mum and dad.

From left to right, you can see a penguin baby, penguin mum, a foster fawn baby and maybe what looks like a normal grey baby at the end. Assume its not a BC otherwise it would have black cheeks now?

This is mum with her baby

Mum, her 3 babies and one of the fawn fosters

I'm really enjoying all these babies and will look forward to what the parents can make again. Very sweet couple
