Dybowski Twinspot and Red Throated Parrot finch babies.

Post by Gonz » Fri Apr 22, 2016 11:45 pm

5 twinspots fledged today! Even the little runt was out. I was wondering how long five of them would last cramped in the bamboo nest lol. First finches to hatch in my aviary, so its pretty cool. I only have two photos, one that I took while they were almost two weeks old and in the nest still and the other of one exploring.

Red throated parrot finches were second. Have three that hatched and are about 1 1/2 weeks old.

Congrats! Twinspots aren't easy, so you must be doing something right.

Haider
I fed them finch mix, sprouted seed with egg food, mealworms and crickets.
The mealworms were the smallest (1/2 inch) I could find and they ate them whole. My other finches eat them also.

The crickets were also small, about a week old but not pinheads. They actually preferred to "hunt" for the crickets after they got out of the deep dish.

Might be different from what others do but it worked for me. I even closed banded all of them and parents didn't mind. Maybe I got lucky.

Forgot to mention that I have them in a very large outdoor aviary.

Wow! How exciting for you.
Would love to see more pictures as they grow and develop and color up. They are gorgeous looking birds.

Congratulations, and good luck with the PF's.

You feed good. I love twinspot finches but they require live food. See I live in Wisconsin and cant have outdoor aviaries, I wish I can but we have long winters. The other thing is, I really do not want to get into keep live mealworms.
Keep us posted with more info and pics.

Good luck.

I don't keep mealworms either, I buy them by the thousands.

Great job on the twin spots! Where do you get your meal worms and how much per thousand?

I get them at rainbowmealworms.net
I don't know if they are more or less than other places, I just get them here because its close to me and I can drive to one of the facilities to pick them up.
