Question on Gouldian

Post by bmohan28 » Mon May 30, 2016 12:48 pm

Hi All,

I bought a pair of blue gouldians a month ago to add to my existing flock / collection. I've given them a individual cage for breeding along with proper diet, nest box etc. My male has salomn head , white / purple breast and blue back and my female is black head, purple breast blue back. I start to notice that the noise of my female turning to black indicating she is getting in to breeding mode. My male sings and gets in to the nest box etc. But i dont see any kind of color change to his noise. What is the color indication in salmon head blue male to identify they are breeding mode. I see him singing but does not take the nesting materials to the box etc.

Your male is either a RH (RedHead) or a YH (YellowHead), in a Blue body they can not express red or yellow so the head will be visually salmon/tan. White/Purple (WhiteBreast split to PurpleBreast) is not possible only PB/WB (PurpleBreast split to WhiteBreast)
What is the color indication in salmon head blue male to identify they are breeding mode.
Males beaks in most mutations are either red tipped or yellow tipped. When in breeding mode the tip color will smear towards the eyes in males. Males beaks do not turn black like the hens.
In the Blue mutation there is no tip color so it is very hard to tell from the beaks.

Your male is RH.WB.Blue (RedHead (or YellowHead but we'll assume RH).WhiteBreast.Blue) and your female is BH.PB.Blue (BlackHead.PurpleBreast.Blue)

First I must say it is not a good idea to breed Blue to Blue because the gene pool is too small in most areas.

From that pair you will get
males:
RH/BH.PB/WB.Blue (RedHead split to BlackHead.PurpleBreast split to WhiteBreast.Blue)
females:
RH.PB/WB.Blue (RedHead.PurpleBreast split to WhiteBreast.Blue)

The best way is to pair them up with a split to Blue mate.
