Almost had two chicks :(

Post by JustAlex09 » Tue May 31, 2016 8:38 am

So my Zebra Finch pair laid their third clutch a while back and produced two viable eggs. Isis and Osiris were surprisingly diligent, considering they didn't sit on the previous two clutches at all.

Unfortunately these two guys suffered from late-stage embryo death over the weekend (they were still nice and alive on Friday, very much dead when I checked them today). Not positive on the COD but I think it may have had something to do with the fact that the air sack took up more space than the actual chick. The shells were very brittle too. Was honestly surprised the two eggs contained actual chicks, to be honest.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? I mean, usually as the chick develops the air sack is supposed to get smaller, not bigger, right? Is there something specific that causes this?

(Also I apologize for the lack of pics. I can't find my camera and the quality of the pics my phone takes is absolutely horrendous).
Zebra Finches - Isis & Osiris, Bast & Sobek, Anubis, Ra, Horus, Iah, Kauket, Menhit
Society Finches - Cricket, Fly, Katydid, Amblypygi, Aphid, Roach, Mantis, Mothra, Ladybug, Junebug
House Sparrow - Pig
Cockatiel - Merlin
Bourke Parakeets - Ruby, Graphite
Budgie - R2D2
... and 5 cats, a turtle, 2 fish and a dog.

I've noticed the air sac gets larger right before the chicks pip and hatch. Sometimes lack of humidity can cause late death in the shell.

Sorry they didnt make it. :(
