after feeding the diamonds today I looked at the greed feed bowl and notice one tri colour eating the lettuce leaves. thought this was unusual as i'd never seen them do it. late today I had to add more seed to the seed bowl and decided to do a quick finger test in their nest.
well they have done the deed and now have young or one pair has. not sure how many but possible two. I just gave them a light touch so nothing serious =D>

Colt

Hey Colt,

Are you sure that you have a male and a female?

They are beautiful birds.

lately I've been catching a few birds out of this particular aviary to sell off. it was a bit on the overcrowded side with 80 or so inmates. i reduced the numbers by 30 a few days back with another 20 due to go by the weekend. so far it still looks good with the tri-colours as there is always one adult bird poking its head out from the nest.

raining and cold today so not the best day to exit into to world but I just saw 3 tri colour young having a go at attempting to fly :) so after feeding the parents I dropped the covers back down on the flight and will check they are all back in the rear shelter section on night fall.
once better weather hits I think a couple of photos would be good to show

Congrats Wildbill ! That's great. Mine still aren't doing a thing but hiding in the greenery.

@lovezebs - I was told they were a pair, but I may DNA them to be sure.

my 3 young are out of the nest and flying about now. they like sitting up high together in the bushes in the shelter. not what you'd call colourful but nice in their own way

Colt

Have you ever heard either of your pair sing?

I've just become the proud owner of a pair of Chestnut-breasted munia. Mine are a touch flighty but perhaps not to the extent your tri-coloureds are. I haven't heard either of mine sing yet, but they do have quite different chest and back colourings (see the last image on either webpage below) so I hope I have a hen/cock pair.

CBM 1(male?)

CBM 2 (female?)

I provided mine with four different nests so hopefully having a choice will encourage some amourous behaviour :D

Cheers.

Just an update on my pair: they are both female, despite the different chest colouring :-(

Also, a bird breeder I know keeps CBMs and both his hens and cocks look identical and have the darker brown chest. I'm now searching for two CBM cocks, but they are near impossible to find here in Japan.

LOL!!! I call my birds "inmates" too.
