Baby chicks are here! :-)

Post by chevy cloddog » Sun Dec 11, 2016 8:41 pm

Hi All, finaly done waiting and as i went to feed my two pairs of zebras and my pair of societies i noticed that all my birds were acting kind of strange so i decieded to take a peek in all there nest and come to my suprise we have baby chicks in all the nests! Woo Hoo!
There are still some eggs in there nests so i guess in a day or two they should all be done hatching.

That's wonderful news :-BD

A big congratulations to you and to the proud parents.

Now bring on the hard boiled eggs, the greens, and the spray millet, and be prepaired for noisy babies demanding to be fed from sunrise to past sunset :(( :(( :((

First clutches, are the most excting, and you have three first's, which is more exciting than ever.

I think you will enjoy this, watching these parents racing back and forth, feeding these little ones, and these tiny tots getting louder by the day.

It is fun.

One quick word....
If by some chance you find a tiny pinky infant on the cage floor, pop it back into it's nest. It doesn't always happen, but it does sometimes, and people tend to panic (I know I did).

Congrats! Those first clutches are so exciting, though it never gets old.

Enjoy!! Wow! So many babies at one time!! Don't be surprised if you find your societies feeding the zebras as well (if they are housed in the same cage).

When a baby cries, societies love to get in there and help :YMHUG: (especially when they are already in breeding mode!)

Fun stuff!

Thanks all for the info! But now i noticed that my societies and one pair of zebras are in the nest taking turns and my other pair of zebras seem to me like they are hardly in the nest box.
Dont get me wrong, they do go in there but not as much as my other birds do.
My question is this normal or something I should be concered about?
Thanks for all your help! Mike

Are they housed in all different cages or all in one? Since you are seeing all 3 pairs feeding at the same time, it would be noticible if one pair fed less than the others.

I have a pair of lazy parents (gouldians) which are slow to feed and when I compare them to my other pair, they seem lacking and I supplement feed.
However , when I look back, they raised the last clutch of the season (last year) without incident, even though they were slower, the chicks got to full adult molt. so I am asking myself this year
"Why am I helping this tried and true pair"?

I'd say, leave the slower parents feeding alone for now. They may be younger and learning. If the chicks look red (dehydrated ) or too weak to beg I would step in and help feed them.

All three pair are housed seperately. The chicks looked like they are healthy and getting bigger as the days go by.
I just thought that they should be in there like the other parents are with there clutch.
Maybe its just me for my first time with clutches.
I must be more of a worry wart than they are! Lol,but at this stage I dont want anything to go wrong.

If the chicks in the 'slow parents' clutch, are growing nicely and have full crops, then I would not be concerned.
