Over crowded nest.. dead baby? :(

Post by Finchluv » Sat May 13, 2017 11:30 am

Have a pair of zebra finches, four out of five eggs hatched. I check-up on the babies often since they are seasoned breeding birds however when I checked today I noticed that one of my baby's looks to have passed and is pushed down against the bottom I'm not a hundred percent sure the baby is passed at this point but what I do know is that the three finches in the nest are much bigger than this baby and should have left the nest a couple of days ago, if not more! note the smaller baby was alive yesterday. I'm wondering if I should do anything to remove the babies from the nest and check if the little one is still alive I'm very confused on what to do I've never seen this happen please help! :| :(

Hi,

Take out the 3 big ones and place safely at bottom of cage.

Remove tiny baby and check for life.
If dead, bury or dispose of body.
If alive, whip up a batch of warm hand feeding formula and carefully feed with tooth pick or handfeeding syringe.

Keep baby warm and safe, and continue feeding every couple of hours, until baby comes around and starts begging.

At that point replace baby in the nest, and watch to see if parents are feeding. If not handfeed until parents take over.

Goodluck

If they have not fledged yet, then by all means put them back into the nest.

Sorry about your little guy :( .
