Dummy eggs for zebras?

Post by BWilliMaq » Wed Dec 06, 2017 1:53 am

Ok let me start by saying my zebras just had a clutch fledge and it looks to me like they are mating again. I really can’t deal with another clutch at this point and I’m wondering if dummy eggs is the way to go for preventing more egg laying?

Also, I didn’t get a good close look at the first clutch and need to know the color of Zebra Finch eggs? White or blue?

Another question, how long after mating does the hen begin laying her eggs?

I have an open canary type nest in my flight cage now and the mating pair love it. I removed the covered basket nest where the clutch was housed, tried removing the canary nest and the pair kind of went crazy without it. I was afraid they would get hurt so I put it back. I am planning on moving the whole family in a week or two to a much larger flight cage. Will this arrangement reduce the male’s aggression towards his fledglings? I have tassel type toys in the cage and he plays with them quite a bit. This cuts down on the feather pulling but he’s still somewhat mean to his kids.

A bunch of questions at once I know, but any and all help would be appreciated!

Moving them to a larger cage should help stop the attacks. However you will have to wait intill all of the babies are completely independent. Like stated in another posting you do not want them starving to death. My suggested action would be to give each bird at least one nest of different kinds so they have a choice. Also add in a couple feather dusters to help with the plucking problems. It keeps the pluckers satisfied enough not to pluck the other birds. Have any other questions? Good luck.

Hey you guys are the best! Thank you so much for the answers to my questions! The fledglings are close to independence I believe so I’ll give them another few days and see how they are. The new cage is already set up with a few different tassel toys and I’ve got some nests in there to see how that goes. Once again thanks for the info!
