Checking eggs WITHOUT candling
There's lots of info about candling, but generally in my experience, candling is a bad idea. I have compiled my experiences here, but since I can't take a decent photo to save my life I have resorted to illustrations.
If you have sensitive birds who loathe nest checks, simply stick your phone into the nest when they are away, snap a quick picture, and check for these signs and indications so you can improve your guessing and see how your eggs are doing hands-free.

I never candle eggs- I just wait and see if they hatch or not!

Fraza I read about it in the other thread, I should change this. It's not good in freshly laid eggs, but as they age the air sack does go down a bit.

Ive seen chicks hatch from some of the oddest looking eggs. I had javas hatch 3 times from eggs that looked like the chick had shrunk into about 1/4th of the egg's volume.

Babs One finch, which I raised to adulthood from day 1, came out of an egg the size of a pea!! I couldn't believe it. I thought it would die for sure, so I never took any pictures.
We named her Lambsauce because we could never find her! The egg literally looked half empty when she pipped and zipped.

Did she grow into a small size zebra or did she just stay small?MisterGribs wrote: Babs One finch, which I raised to adulthood from day 1, came out of an egg the size of a pea!! I couldn't believe it. I thought it would die for sure, so I never took any pictures.

Always good to remind people to enjoy the journey but not toss something that may be viable. ;)
