My firefinches just tried another clutch, taking it all the way to hatching. Once again only one hatched, and I found it tossed. I put it with my societies, who kept it alive with warmth for a few days but never fed the poor thing so I found it dead this morning.
I don't want to remove the nest, because they built it themselves, but I know I should be worried about how many clutches she has per year. I saw them copulating again last night so I predict there'll be new eggs shortly. It's probably too late to ensure these eggs have a better chance of hatching, but in the future what's the best way to ensure successful eggs? Is it 100% diet, or are there other things to try?

Re: Another failed clutch
I would as soon as they lay the new eggs out then in with society’s dont allow them to let them hen hatch give them to society’s straight away as they are laid and when clutch is done take away the nest
Because it won’t just be effecting her health but if they keep failing they won’t ever learn to bring up one because they will get so used to them dying

Re: Another failed clutch
fire finches are not that difficult to breed and I have breed quite a few of them. you never mentioned green feed for egg food or any other food source.
I think if you have not tried anything why not start them now on daily intake of fresh lettuce soaked in a high multi vitamin mix and a small amount of boil egg
now if you think lettuce is not good for your birds -tell that to my $1000 a head gouldian mutations
and it doesn't hurt them and it won't hurt your fire finch either
it may look like a lettuce but its actually a high powered vitamin mix
