Well, you should be starting to see hie eyes opening soon.
If he's growing, it's a good sign that the parents are feeding him.

It seems to be growing quite well; I'm starting to see its beak and the scales on its legs developing now. Unfortunately I have to leave for a few days. I cleaned out the cage and gave them a pile of fortified dry eggfood and millet spray so they should be fine for the time being.

It is important to let some eggs in the nest while the chicks are small, especially with only child ones, otherwise the parents' weight could smash or deform the chick.

Thank you. I got back last night and checked the baby today and it's fine. No food in the crop, but everyone just woke up so I imagine it will resolve itself in a few minutes. I can hear it begging a little louder now when the adults come in.

I suppose I will have to leave them in, then. Or maybe I could replace them with some fake clay ones so the nest doesn't risk contamination.

Make sure they are feeding the little fellow.
If his crop is still empty in say half an hour after you've placed food in the cage, than it's not a good sign. He should be plumping up by now.
Leaving the extra eggs in the nest is important.
As Ricardo mentioned, they help as buffers between parents and chick. Also they serve as little hot water bottles. They absorb the heat from the parents, and keep the singleton warm, when parents are not in the nest. They also encourage the parents to return to the nest, and not attempt starting another clutch elsewhere.
Hope you had a good trip.

Just took a photo and the right side of its crop is stuffed with eggfood and millet. (I'll add a string of chronological photos in a few days.) It looks to have doubled in size once again, and seems to be close to growing some feathers. I'm not sure if it is possible to tell at this age, but it looks like the bird may very well be a chocolate self judging from the darkening of its wings.
It seems like the adults are shoving the eggs off to the side of the nest box, so I fear they are not doing their job. Maybe they are now too fragile to support a 15-gram bird sitting on top of them, as the eggs go hollow after about a month sitting out in the open.
The trip was fine. I got to hear a whip-poor-will, which was pretty cool.

Glad to hear that you had a good trip.
I have never heard or seen a Whippoorwill (although I remember hearing about it in some song lyrics). Had to look it up, just out of curiousity
.
Regarding baby.
Sounds like he's growing nicely, with parents feeding well.
Looking forward to seeing pictures of the babe.

It looks like it is finally growing some feathers! Here's a bunch of photos; the file name says how old the bird is in each one.

It has finally opened its eyes, and is now starting to look like a real bird, rather than a bag of Jell-O. Its flight feathers have now broken through, and I can now confirm this bird is chocolate pied, as it has three or so white feather shafts on one wing, and two on its tail. I may remove the society finch nest box after the baby fledges, though it looks like there may be some more babies this year. I saw the female gouldian enter her nest box under her own will for the first time today; the male also went in with her for a couple of minutes.
I will do. It's a bit of a pain uploading from the SD card, so I will probably continue posting a string of photos every few days.
