How's it going over there? I was just thinking before bed last night....as you sure it was Scout & Lady Blue who tossed, or another gouldian in the flight?

Is there a chance another bird pecked at the baby after it was tossed?

Babs

Nah, they won't allow anyone into that nest, and there is always one of them in there.

Better than Fort Knox...

I'm sure it was them, because they were obviously not feeding him either.

I told them off both yesterday and today, and they just sat there round eyed staring at me as if to say...that little alien was bothering our pretty eggs...

Let's hope they don't think the next baby is an alien. :-L I wonder which one did it. :-\ Is Scout trying to nest or mate again?

I'm assuming no more hatchlings. You gonna separate them or let them try again?

Babs

Hi Babsi,

So far nothing more has hatched, but they're still sitting.

Let them sit and think about what they did.

I don't like to seperate couples who pick each other out of a group.

lovezebs The last time my gouldians tossed out chicks, it was the male who did it. "This bloody ugly thing is trying to eat my eggs, quickly get it out of here."

Thanks Trisha,

Breedingbirds, can be a wonderful hobby, but there is a downside to it too, and the downside is not pretty.

Hi Babs,

The silly things abandoned the nest.

Best they did, I think. Maybe those two would do better in a breeder cage. You know from experience the privacy and focus on the nest (and each other) can do wonders.

I still have high hopes for them.

I hope so, as I think they'll make beautiful babies together.

Sorry to hear this. Always a major disappointment when this happens.

These things happen.
It's just part of bird breeding. Hopefully next time around they'll get it right.

These two picked each other, so they want to breed, but just don't have the experience yet, which is something which will come with time.

As Babs mentioned, they may need more privacy, which will be doable once I have a smaller cage available in a few weeks time, then we shall see what happens.

I have the feeling that I will never get to the tossing stage. My hen won't sit. She sees the egg, and she goes like this  and she is like "EEEK! That thing does not belong in a clean, pristine nest! It must go now!" And she rolls it to the edge of the nest, while I try to explain to her that she is supposed to make the nest to put that round thing in, and drops it to the bottom of the cage. Then she eats the shell. I have only seen one whole one, and she has lain five.
I currently own:
An Australian shepherd
Many chickens
4 goats
A cat
And a bunny
