Just hold the bird in one hand and then with the other hand just gently hold the top of the wing IE where the tissue and bone structure is and carefully open up, after time you'll get used to it and think nothing of it,

If a bird had mite or slightly cut his / her wing it's good to be able to look at the wing closely for inspection,

Think of an avain vet Fraza, they'd probably be doing this on a daily basis :YMSMUG:

Thanks for the input Andiok. Their split /fawn mother has brown feathers throughout her wings, but you have to look real close to see it.

Mom and Dad (Tux and Charm) are on the left.

The pair on the right (Tails & Lady) are busy with 4 hatchlings just a few days old.

i thought so too Babs.
I bet you that baby is a pastel Male.
Pastel (diluite) mutation in Javas is the only one recessive sex-linked mutation.
Now normally from a pair of split pastel to a normal cock you get.
25% split hens - 25% normal hens - 25% pastel cocks - 25% normal cocks.

Unless your male is split of some fawn or pastel genes and in that case everything gets more complicated to know the type of mutation of your little guy.

That's awesome that you can school my on the java-genes. I'm going to have a load of studying to get to now.

I started the same way with gouldians "I only want to breed normals"....then I end up with splits and stay up too late trying to figure it all out for months. hahaha!

And the research ends up being crazy fun!

Here we go again! Weeeee!

I do so much enjoy their intelligence ...and their drama.

Theyre sooo rubust and if you colony breed them, they will make you belly-laugh with their antics.

reminds me so much of people, but in a good way.

I'm glad I can help Babs.
Genetics is fascinating to me and the fact that not all birds have the same types and outcomes of mutations makes it more interesting.
And great job by the way for taking the time to study the genetics of your birds. There is nothing better. That's how every experienced breeder has started off

Bigger and LOUD! %-( Now other nest with 4 chicks is chiming in! Those all look like they are going to be normal or pied.

Hard to get their mom, Lady, off the nest for a camera shot. The wooden nest box on that one opens from the top instead of the sides. Scared she is going to fly out on me. haha

She's a protective hen. Probably poke me in the eye. LOL Even Charm bit my finger when I wiggled it around the entrance to try and coax her out.

Think they like me? :-??
