Everything is going well. It is feathering out, with some finally growing on its chest. It starts looking more and more like a bird ever day! I imagine it will fledge within a week.
I overreacted with the gouldians today... I took a peek in their nest box and the female flew out, revealing three eggs. She did not go back in for the ten to fifteen minutes I was watching her, so I thought she had abandoned, which was reinforced when I saw she was sleeping on the perch tonight. So I tried to put her back in the box, but she wouldn't stay, so I figured I would transfer one of the eggs to the society finches as a kind of insurance policy (they are showing signs of breeding again). Thankfully the societies were not bothered. Being as dark as it was, both the gouldians started flapping around and flying into things, so I had to catch them, put them back into the cage, and turn on the light so they could regain their footing. By that time I had pretty much given up, so I turned off the light and left.
And then I learned that gouldians don't start sitting tight by day three, but may spend the first bit exclusively incubating at day. I guess I must have gotten that mixed up with what I've read about breeding society finches (mine start sitting tight for three eggs starting day one). Things seem to have a way of working out, and they fortunately didn't seem too flustered by the night's events, so I think there is at least some chance everything should be just fine.

Update: Female gouldian has gone into the nest box since. I think I may want to consider starting a new thread.

So glad to hear that the little guy is doing well.
I hope the Goulds went back to sit on their eggs, and that all is well again.

The gouldians are sitting again. It is now dark and the female is still incubating, so perhaps she has started sitting tight. The male was flying around and calling constantly a few minutes before the light went off, like he was offended that the female would rather sit on her eggs than with him

Icearstorm, Whippoorwill....ahhh, visions of my neighbor, in his boxers, 3am, gun in hand, to eliminate the screaming Whippoorwill enter my head. They were nesting in the FL sandhills behind our houses. The cry of the whippoorwill is awesome as long as it is not right under your bedroom window.

I can imagine so! Ever heard a mockingbird sing all night? It's also quite annoying...

Some more photos. Once again, the day number is shown in the file name of each photo.

Congrats
the crop seems to be quite full, that is the bright side of having only one chick, they usually are very well fed, and grow to be a little bigger than the average.

Wow those crops are sure full.
I have to say, those little babies are not the cutest things when they are first born, but they change and grow so quickly!
Hope your little guy makes it with no problems! Keep us updated!

Yesterday I took it out to take a photo... I didn't know it could fly. An hour later, we succeeded in pulling it out from between the bed and wall via duct tape. It seems fine and fledged today.

So young and already having his little adventures
It happened to me once, with a lovebird fledgiling, he almost flew through the window, luckily it was clumsy enough to strike the glass and i could grab him on time.
It is good to know that he is safe and sound.
What about your gouldians?

I just made a new thread for the gouldians so this one doesn't become any more cluttered: Breeding Gouldians
