We have been giving them a lot of mini meal worms and the adult Cordon Bleu female is always the first one to the dish gobbling them up so maybe that has something to do with it.

I Love my BCCB! They are the sweetest birds in my cage, and they have my favorite song.
Thanks marymac .

Photography has been a life long hobby of mine and the birds are the cutest subjects :)

a_gouldian - You are doing a great job! How many youngsters do you have out of that one pair? And I agree with everyone else, those little guys are just adorable. Can't wait to have some of my own.
I have never shipped birds either (I usually sell mine to friends from the local bird club), so unfortunately I won't be able to help you there. But please keep us in mind when they are old enough.

So far we have 3 juveniles that are about 2.5 months old, 5 fledglings that should be weaned sometime next week, and two nestlings that will fledge this coming week, so 10 in all. In addition we just put another 4-5 eggs under an inexperienced trio of Societies so not sure how that will go. I don't know if the Cordon Bleu adults are done breeding this season or not.

They are just adorable.

Do Cordon Bleus get along well with Societies and Gouldians in the same cage as long as the cage is big enough?

I would think so. Our adult pair are with two Red-billed fire finches and a green backed Twinspot. We have them in an extra large double flight cage.

Two new BCCB chicks fledged today. I think they should have stayed put another day or two but they are insistent about getting out of the box. They fledged 1-2 days early. One came out yesterday and I put him back in the nest box three times.

Yes, they are from the same pair. And that pair is laying more eggs now! Not sure if we will have a pair of birds to put the new eggs under.

Will they not sit on their own eggs?

They sit and then the chicks get tossed at 1-2 days old. We have been through this three times with them.

Most finches like cucumber. You can slice rounds, and they will eat all the center, leaving the green outer ring.

I can't remember where I saw it, but there was a video showing the BCCB's mating dance in slow motion. What appears to us as simply hopping up and down is a much more intricate dance.
