Re: Any Guess? Please Help!!!
alright new thing. I have this woman from craigslist bringing me a couple male zebra finches as well as some stuff to go with them. My questions is if the eggs that I have now hatch and I have females from the clutch, can I breed them to these zebra finches I am about to get? I have one woman bringing me 2 Florida fancy males (double factor) and another person that is bringing me a male fawn zebra finch. If I breed these males to any females I have is there any chance of an interesting mutation coming out or even a chance of the children surviving? If there is a chance and I get new mutations this might be might be amazing. Anyone have an idea about the likely hood of anything successfully happening?

A zebra finch is a zebra finch, if paired up properly the majority of cocks will pair to virtually all hens,FinchLover&Breeder wrote: alright new thing. With over 50 odd different zebra mutations I'm sure you'll no doubt breed some kinda mutation
Is obviously impossible to tell what you'll get at present because it's down to you what birds yer decide to pair up with

good news. we got egg 4 as of this morning. is this likely the most amount of eggs she is going to lay? and quick question. what do you guys use as substrate for the bottom of your cage? I decided to use cleanable and pre-washed play-sand.

I like your idea of the sand. We have people (a few with aviaries) that use it successfully. I wish that was an affordable option here.
Some use newspaper or puppy pads.
I lay puppy pads on top of my grates when chicks are going to fledge so they dont break a wing or a leg in the grating (they are clumsy the first few days)

cool. good idea. If you want I can buy and send you a bag of sand that I use for all of my pets that need sand. down here you can get i think like 10 pounds for under $3 and that's with tax. I just need you to pay me back after I send it. Please PM me to keep chatting about this subject. Sound good?

You are a sweetheart for offering. I know you got your hands full there.
You're gonna need that $ to take care of your new babies ;)
But thank you for letting me know its a lot cheaper in Florida. I will look online and see if I can have it shipped from a whole saler down there.
Thanks for the tip!

Even better Babs take the grates out, I personally can't stand the blimmin things, they cause more problems than ever,Babs wrote: FinchLover&Breeder

It must be like us walking on scaffolding all day long in bare feet
Yea whilst I can see the grates stopping the birds from eating any waisted seed etc the birds excrete on the bars of the grate and there is nothing to soak up and dry the feases and the birds then go and walk straight into it and cake all of their feet in the feases,
Apart from the fact there's definitely a risk of birds trapping and possibly even breaking their feet in the bars
Definitely not my idea of clean cage bottoms,
Tried grates many years ago and vouched that I'd never use em again through being totally useless and would much rather use paper or wood shavings directly on the floors of all the cages

What are we talking about here Nick,
My last post is mentioning about not liking to use grates on the floor of the cage, this would have nothing to do with the nests,
If the cages are all wire breeder cages then just lift up the flap and pull the grate out,
However it probably sounds like yer cage is probably more of a std ornamental wire cage with a plastic base with clips holding the cage to the base of the cage,
If this is the case if yer very careful you can place the cage on a table, unclip the base and quickly move the cage off of the base and onto the table, take out the grate from the base and then carefully but quickly lift the cage up the few inches back onto the base
It may sound easier said than done but is really not that difficult to do, I've done this many many times for various people over the years who have all decided to ditch those damm cage grates
Be lucky
