Cash! when should she be moved

Post by lisalambourne » Fri Jul 06, 2007 6:23 am

Hi well cash's 5 babies are almost 4 weeks old now, they are starting eating for themselves and don't take as much from mum now. Cash seems to be trying to get away from them though, she is still attentive and looks after them but it seems she is fed up with them inbetween, always trying to find somewhere on her own. How long now till thay are eating totaly on there own so I can remove her to give her a break from them. I have a fiend for her in another cage I have called him gannet cos he is always pecking the bottom of the cage..even when we was trying to catch him he kept stopping for a peck, I was hoping to leave cash with babies till his quarrentine period finished but thing she might need to be moved before then. Oh and when will the colouring come on the fledglings when is their first moult?

How much longer for the quarantine period? I would leave her in with her babies till his quaratine period is finished, if possible. She may be trying to get some time off, but they will not hurt each other for now. I can't remember just how long it takes to color up for Zebras, but it isn't very long. I think once their beaks lose all the black, they are usually colored up, but I'm not positive on that--haven't had Zebra babies in a while.

Here is a timeline for Zebra babies that I found:

Chick Timeline

From: Ken Glasson

Incubation = 14 days

to fledge = 21 days

to independence = 35 to 42 days

to start first moult = about 35 days

to complete mature feathering = about 60 days to approx. full size = about 90 days

to breeding maturity for hens = (my rules only)min 6 months, preferred 9 months. (Cocks can be 3 months)

This info came from this site:
