I have seen several times where the HEN will pick on the white or pied chick in her clutch.

My first hand-fed hen from last year just hatched her first chick on the 4th of July! She turned out to be a good egg sitter, but hasn't showed any signs of feeding it yet. So I'm being Mr. Mom again for a bit. My suspicions are she might start if it begins "pipping".
BTW, that makes 24. These dang Zebs lay eggs like chickens!

Congratulations on the new chick hopefully the parents take over the feeding for you.

I've succesfully hand raised RH parrot and zebra finches with Kaytee exact for all birds.. The gouldian chicks are always a challenge and I've never been able to raise one successfully. My first question is, am I using the right formula or is the kaytee with the higher fat content better?

I have always used Kaytee Exact so it's not the formula that may be the problem.

Hiya, I've read some of the previous posts wrt fat and protein content of the handfeeding formula. I see most of you guys use Lefeber, but unfortunately I'm unable to find it in SA. Believe me, I trust katee exact. It is expensive, so that is why I want to make sure which one to buy next time.
Katee high fat with a 16% fat and 22% protein content or the ordinary one with the 9% fat and 22% protein content. The high fat formula also contains sunflower seeds and peanuts, will it be save to use with finches especially goulds. I would appreciated any advice _ thx.

Personally, for finches, I'd go with the ordinary one. I checked their website, and the one with higher fat (19% protein, 13% fat) is marketed as Kaytee Handfeeding Forumula Macaw, which makes me think it is geared more toward the larger hookbills. The website didn't list one with 22% protein and 16% fat.

Thx Sally, I also decided to stick to the ordinary one. Bought some this afternoon. My husband always say: "Keep it simple".

Hello everyone,
This is my first time hand feeding. It is going really well. I had to remove a little one from a nest of 3, it hatched about a week later the the other two and noticed after 2 days in the nest it wasn't being fed much, so I brought it in the house. I am using a plastic squeezable pipette from the fish store where I buy aquarium supplies, it has a long tiny opening, has worked great for the little zebra. In fact i just cut off the tip to allow thicker food in this morning.
My mixture for this one is formula, powdered roudybush, finely mashed egg and pedailyte. Doing this one for a week now. Growing fast.

It has been 5 days on the older ones. They were 2 wks old when i started hand feeding. There are 6 of them. I'm not sure when to start weaning and introducing seeds and such. My adults are on strictly roudy bush so i don't know were to go from here. My last clutch were about three weeks old starting to leave nest and parents showed millet to them.
Any advice in this will be very appreciated.
