I've always used the store brought egg food as it keeps for a long time and I don't have to worry about it spoiling. It's also so convient.

I have just been boiling eggs and crushing it and giving it to them daily.
I will sometimes mix in their seed with it. They love it.
My babies are thriving as well.

It is alot of work to keep up with the fresh egg - but they seem to love it more than the store food. It's totally up to you though.

I like the bird bread recipe found at www.finchaviary.com. It does not spoil, you can keep extras in the freezer, and my birds like it. If you start adding other things to it, like veggies, then it will spoil.

I also like the eggfood recipe at www.fairestfinches.com. Since it has fresh eggs in the mixture, it will spoil, so needs to be given only during the day.

For something to leave in the breeding cages at all times, I like Morning Bird's Miracle Meal. It is a dry eggfood, so I can leave it free choice. This way, as soon as my birds wake up, they have eggfood available.

Or you can just mash up hardboiled eggs.

The main thing is that they have a source of protein, if you are trying to breed them. If your schedule is very busy, then commercial dry eggfood is the best. You can get as fancy as you want with your eggfood--the bottom line, they have to like it, or they won't eat it.

I'll second that crushed hard boiled egg.
