Foster Society Finches now Real Parents

Post by L in Ontario » Tue Feb 26, 2008 9:24 pm

In November I bought 2 male Society Finches to be fosters for my Gouldians if the need arose. It did and they did an awesome job of fostering and weaning 2 Gouldian chicks.

On Dec 14th I bought 1 more male as I heard 3 males were better than two. Once the 2 Gouldian chicks fledged I added the third male Society so he could learn from the first 2 Societies. Well now the chicks are completely weaned and have been removed from the Society cage. Two days ago I gave one of the original male Society Finches to my daughter as she wants to use it as a foster for her Gouldians. But now the two remaining Society Finches are sitting on 3 eggs... of their own!

Now I didn't want Society babies but I don't know if I can remove and discard the eggs. My question is this: as one of the current pair did successfully foster Gouldian chicks - Will it be okay to let them raise their own and WILL they foster Gouldians again if necessary???

Thank you!
Liz

They will do fine raising their own chicks and fostering again. Those little guys are awesome parents regardless if the children were adopted

Oh THANK YOU! I'd heard once they rear their own clutch, they wouldn't foster another.

I'm so glad to hear this as I don't think I can pull the eggs. I was able to get a good look in their nestbox this morning when they were both out for half a minute eating - there are 5 eggs!
