Yikes Societies acquired

Post by chrischris » Mon Mar 17, 2008 10:15 am

Well I acquired a pair of societies. Wasn't too happy as my friend was just going to let them go in the wild and I knew they would die so here they are with me. It's a M/F pair so to discurage them from nesting I've placed a box nest in there and within a few days they took to the box so I've now place 5 eggs in there for them. Interestingly only the hen took to the nest and the male didn't. I wonder if he will contribute to the incubation process.

It's an interesting song the male sings and they seem so skiddish compared to the gouldiand wipping their tails around.

I LOVE my societies. Mine were real skittish for a couple weeks. So you gave them fake eggs? Are they buying it?

How good hearted of you to take the Societies in. :D

I can't understand why some people think that letting birds back into the wild will be ok. They just don't seem to understand that domesticated birds can't survive like wild born birds do. I hear so many stories about people letting rats...snakes...gerbils out into the wild thinking they will be just fine... #-o

I hope you took the time to sit down with your friend and gently educate him about the dangers of doing this.

I didn't even touch on that point FeatherHarp!

Chris-- It was good of you to take them in, I'm sure you will grow fond of the societies even if they came to you in some not-so-great circumstances.

Well they are taking fine to the fake eggs. It's quite amazing to see them being so attentive to the eggs I placed in their nest. I started out with one egg per day till I was up to 5 eggs. I think I may just pit in another egg to make it an even six eggs. I can see why people take to societies and fostering birds under them.

Chris, you will really enjoy those Societies. Since you have Gouldians, you now have a pair that may be fosters if you ever needed them. Fosters are a last resort, but it sure is nice to save some of those babies that would have been lost otherwise. And it sure beats handfeeding!

So true Sally but I'm always worried about the chicks imprinting on the societies when they are bigger and become parents themselves. I'm always concern that they would be bad parents if fostered.

I know it's the whole fostering debate but I hate to do it.

For now the fake eggs are keeping the pair happy and they seem content. I just wonder how long they will sit before knowing something isn't right?

Glad to hear it!

But I HATE it when people put their pets out into the wild. It's called responsibility, people! Gee.. [-X

Responsibility?? What's that? I thought when you bought an animal you could just get rid of it when you got bored with it....hmmm interesting concept ](*,)

Ugh!

Good job taking in those sweeties. I adore my societies. I have two females. Sooo cute
