extreme hot weather

Post by mickp » Fri Mar 21, 2008 7:30 am

we just recently had a period of 14 days of 100+ temperatures, I was worried that I would lose some of my birds as my aviary is the typical outdoor type that we have in australia.
I was so relieved to find that the heat had the opposite efect on the birds.
the firefinches have 2 young in their nest, orange breasted have 3 young, bengalese/society's have 6 eggs, gouldians have 5 eggs and the button quail never stop laying eggs for anything, in 3 months I have gone from 1 trio to having 14.
not going to mention the zebra finchs as I believe these feathered rabbits could breed on the moon lol

 the firefinches had 2 young in their nest, found both of them dead today. cant figure out why though as both little ones had full crops and mum & dad were getting plenty of live food, green food and seed, water was changed twice daily. unless a spider or something like it got into the nest. I only noticed something was wrong because mum & dad wouldnt go near the nest

Or could it be that the high temperatures was too much for them.

Even humans have succum to high temperatures so why not chicks that can't get enough water.

I have read of babies being lost due to high temps. I think the birds are OK, but the temp inside the nest gets too high for the babies.

Ouchy. Sorry about losing the babies. That heat can really do some damage.

I hope it cools off out there!! It's currently 30deg F in Connecticut, USA. We're anticipating warm temperatures.

Oh wow!! You have button quails!! I've been looking for someone to talk to about them!! I adore them, but I've never cared for them. Are they a challenging to care for? Any special maintenance
