O.K. everone, I am new to all this. My zebra finches have eggs in their nest (4). Should I take the eggs out to candle them or should I just leave them alone now? Any help would be so appreciated. I'm a nervous Mom to be!! Mea

For me, it would depend on how difficult it would be to get into the nest. If I hafta stick my fingers into the nest to take the eggs out, then no. If you have a nest box with a removeable lid, then yes.
Finch eggs are pretty delicate, I wouldn't want to risk cracking one.

I agree, atarasi, the hooded wicker nests I use are impossible. I can't get my fingers in there, and even if I can get the eggs out, putting them back in is another nightmare. The only way I can do it is to use an iced tea spoon, and then I still have to be careful not to crack them.

also wait till they have been incubating for 1 week before you candle is you decide to as it takes about that long to know if they are fretile.

I was planning on candeling mine, but i have those wicker nest and they are hard to get the eggs out of i just wait now and see if the eggs hatch in 2 weeks.

Our zebra began laying eggs today. About four so far. I was reading about candling on the FIC and is states..."Do not attempt to candle eggs if this is your birds' first clutch..."
Well, this is their first. Do we just wait to see if they hatch?

The waiting is the hardest part... for me. I have 2 Gouldian clutches due yesterday! yikes!

Ok..now you're making me wonder what we should do if the hatching is overdue. Good luck with yours.

My shaft-tails hatched this morning. I could tell which ones were fertile by the porcelin look to the shell.

Mine are in a bamboo nest and I can see thru the hole in the back what's going on. I have a small penlight that's omits a white light so I didn't need to take the eggs out to candle them.

We're new to the finch breeding. Do you think they were in the nest earlier and we didn't notice them? Just noticed her going in the nest today. Earlier the male was acting like a nest building fool and today there she is. She wasn't going in the nest yesterday but today she's been in it most of the day; only coming out to eat and spread her wings. And yeah, there's about four.
