I use Kaytee Exact Handfeeding Formula. You use the handfeeding formula till they are weaned onto seeds. Here is the page on the Finch Information Centers breeding section that lists all the temperatures.

Thank you for your prompt responds. I have not been able to successfully feed one to maturity.

Handfeeding is a difficult process. Babies don't make it for a number of reasons. They aspirate easily while being fed. They are not kept warm enough and/or the handfeeding formula is not warm enough. If they or the food is not warm enough, the food sits in the crop and doesn't pass on through (crop stasis). Baby develops a yast infection. And sometimes they simply aren't strong enough from the very beginning to make it.

Absolutely agree with Sally, handfeeding should be your last resort.

Hi Debbie,

Do you only use this scoop to feed them?

I've just joined this forum not too long ago. I see that you photos are old, but i am just now getting a chance to look at them. What amazing photos!! It's crazy how small they are (love how you put the quarter next to him) And the brooder, what an amazing idea, you are very intelligent i was looking at that in awe, then when i continued to read i saw that everyone else was too!!! Great job, and thanks for the pics, i hope to never have to do it, but if i do what a help!!!

Great pics! What age did you close band and what age was the fledge day? A totally gorgeous and lovely looking blue back!! I'd love a few with that conformation and coloring. Great job!

Thanks you all for your lovely comments.

I don't close band.
He was handfed so there really wasn't a "fledge" day, he feathered up same as others. Though the weaning was a bit behind parent raised, which is to be expected. :)

Fabulous pictures and very interesting for us newbies!!! You should patent that brooder idea. What a beautiful bird. I can't get over how they look before they feather out, mercy little bugs aren't they? Who would have known how gorgeous he would be? Great job sure wish someone was breeding these birds near me!
