Their Hatching....

Post by chrischris » Sat Apr 19, 2008 11:39 am

Have a gouldian pair that have been really poor parents they have in the past refused to feed the chicks and they all end up dying.

Well this time they have 7 eggs and the first was to hatch today. I've told myself that I would leave them alone so perhaps this time they would be good parents. Well today I wook up seeing the hatched egg shell on the bottom of the cage so far so good but in front of the nest at the bottom of the cage there was a small chick that was still alive. Well I picked it up and placed it back in the nest box. Six other eggs in there still not hatched yet. Well their off to a bad start but hopefully things will turn around and they will prove me wrong that they are bad parents.

Not sure if they have accepted him back into the nest but I too hope you have a pair or three Society Finches ready. Best wishes for the other 6 eggs.

Nope I don't have a pair of society finches for the new hatching so I just placed it back in the nest and it was not tossed out again. I carefully checked the cage bottom today and all seems well so far. The other 6 eggs should of have hatched today and I do hope that the gould is able to handle this large clutch size. Anyways time will tell. If they don't toss anymore I check the nest again in 1 week to make sure all is fine.

Wish me luck.

Wooo Hooo is right! I'm glad to hear they are doing well. I read on the UK forum the experiences of this guy who's had nothing but bad luck.
It was very discouraging to read.

I'm happy to hear your Gouldians are good parents and everyone is doing well.

I'll let you know how mine do when they hatch (any day now)

Atarasi,

I have another pair where the eggs have also hatched 6 days ago and I have not heard a peep from the nest box, so I checked yesterday as I thought the chicks died or the eggs didn't hatch and to my suprise there are 3 chicks really well fed. This pair is really good to the chicks and I guess they feed the chicks really well such that they doen't yell for food because they are always full.

The pair is a green back pair. But I have a nest of blues that just left the nest box this week. They left the nest at 4 weeks which is really long but boy o boy are they big and healthy and even starting to eat on their own.

Chris, you just love to rub it in, don't you! I have a pair of blue backs that are just starting to build their nest. The cock is BH, PB, BB and the hen is BH, WB, NB. I'm hoping to breed one of the chicks back to her so I can get my all time favorite.....BH, WB, BB!
That's going to be awhile away I'm sure.

Ah that's really great news about all your babies Chris!!

atarasi - the waiting game is beginning in your neck of the woods. Best wishes for a successful clutch right through to weaning.

I'm "over the top" myself this morning as one of my Society eggs hatched this morning!! :D :D It's the tiniest thing I've ever seen and there are two 2-1/2 week old Gouldian chicks sitting on it! I'll post on it separately.
