RCCBs at it again!
My RCCBs that raised 3 babies went right back to sitting again, with their 3 fledglings still in the cage with them. I didn't know how this would work out, but didn't want to chance disturbing the nest. Today, I found a half shell with a dead baby on the floor, so I checked the nest. Their nest is so deep that I can barely see inside, but there are a couple of new hatchlings inside. The parents don't seem to mind their first clutch hanging around. The first babies are just starting to color out, and it looks like 2 males and 1 female, and those boys sing their little hearts out all day long.
Has anyone had this happen with waxbills? I will have to monitor this very closely, because I don't want Daddy to suddenly turn on his first clutch.

Wow Sally! Looks like you hit the jackpot with that pair. The only thing I could really suggest is to closely monitor them but ur already doing that so just keep doing what ur doing I guess. My first ever waxbills havent even raised one clutch yet so I cant really speak from experience. Wish I could help more.

Sally, your birds seem to be doing really well.
I really don't think you should worry about your first clutch that much, hopefully the male will be kept busy enough to keep feeding both clutches and not turn on his own offspring. I would suggest removing the 1st fledglings asap after they weaned though as they can get very territorial especially with the babies coloring.

Here is the one and only baby from the second clutch. They had three eggs, but I found one egg on the floor a while back, and one died at about one week old. This one almost seems to be too young to have fledged. I think it is smaller than the babies from the first clutch, less developed. There is very little blue color, whereas the others had lots more blue at fledging. I wonder if it could be that it is so hot now here in Texas that the baby wanted out of a hot nest, or if the parents just aren't as involved this time. I would have thought a single baby would be quite large, getting all the food and attention. The last photo is one of the babies from the first clutch, also on first day of fledging, and it seems to be much more advanced than this one.

Do you think putting fake plants in my cages for my finches privacy will make them want to breed. I have bw mannikins still in the flight with the zebras and saw one singing while the other one shook its tail feathers. it looks like they were trying to mate because he jumped on her back but fell off.
