owl eggs

Post by dfcauley » Thu May 29, 2008 2:25 pm

My owls have again laid 4 eggs. The society finches just hatched three babies of theirs yesterday. woo - hoo!
I am happy about that. B ut...... they are not sitting on their eggs like they should. Can I put these eggs in with the new hatchlings? Everything I know tells me NO, but I hate to see them go to waste.....
Anybody close by want some owl eggs?

Shame.....but no.
Be content with what you've got, there will be other opportunities.
Try swopping your next societies eggs with dummies so you can put the next clutch of owls eggs under them.
Pity to lose a future family of societies but you can't have everything.
Paul.

Well I didn't think that would work, but I just hated to see these eggs to go waste. I am pretty sure they are fertile since three out of the last four did hatch. I am happy with what I got. In fact I have been so excited about these new nestlings. I guess we just always want more.

Unfortunately it's something you don't want to do. The likely result would be that the new hatchlings would be crushed by the older chicks.

Congrats on the society hatchlings for the owls, ughhh. I have heard from many post about breeding owls and not getting really good results i really want a pair but with the difficulty of breeding it makes me think, but i still really want a pair so bad i dont care if they dont breed. And for some reason my socities mate all the time but no eggs. today i saw the socities took over to of my zebra finch nests full of eggs and i guess they plan on raising them.

jamezyboo21,

You may have two male societies. It is not uncommon for two males to mate when no hens are available.

If they both sing you have two males since hens don't sing. If only one sings the best way to find out if you have two males is to seperate them into seperate rooms with in ear shot of one another.

I forgot to mention on your other Owl post that once the babies fledge, they are so cute when they beg. They often duck their heads down and then raise one wing, as if to get the attention of the parents--here I am!

Thanks Sally. I am excited and very surprised. The hen and the cock are staying in the nest with these two babies and being very protective. Even when I enter the bird room they don't leave. And to think...... I fostered the first set. I suppose I should have waited and given them a chance. I did toss one of their eggs yesterday because it was clear, so there is only one left. I haven't checked it........
