shaftail fledging

Post by dfcauley » Wed Jun 04, 2008 12:17 pm

Well look at who came out of the nest today! There are three more, but they haven't come yet. The mom and dad are having a fit today with him out. He is on the floor of the aviary. Can't reach the perch yet. I suppose I will put him back in the nest tonight.

Congrats! I just love all these babies. The other three may wait till tomorrow to come out. On most of my clutches, one baby comes out the first day, followed by the rest the next day. It's like the oldest checks everything out for its little siblings.

One more has come out. I think the other two will come tomorrow.
They look so lost on that big aviary floor. Should I put them back in the nest tonight?

Well I am having some problems with my shaftails. Yesterday the male and female started fighting. I don't know what prompted this. One minute they were in the tree grooming each other and an hour later they were chasing each other around and fighting and pulling feathers out of each other.
I have one baby that has not left the nest yet. I am not sure it is well. I am watching it.
I don't know if this was the right thing to do or not, but I got a big flight cage and put one of the parents in it with the three that left the nest.
I left the other one in the aviary with the other parent because it is still in the nest. I have seen the ones in the cage being fed. They are doing okay, but the parent on the outside is very upset. Any suggestion?

I have had them in a cage in my computer room for a few days now. It has been fun for me ( not for the mother) because I can sit and watch them when I am on the computer. She has been busy feeding all four babies herself, since the cock was acting so ugly to her....
Tonight as they got ready for bed I took this adorable pic. Two of the babies had gotten in a canary nest for the night. The other two went into the bigger nest with mom. Image

Update.... the shaftail babies are all doing well. There are two that seem to want to stay on the floor of the cage for some reason. They sleep in the little above basket each night while the other two sleep with mom in a nest.
But they are all eating well and one of them LOVES cucumber slices.
I just wish the other two would get off the floor.

That pic of the two babies in a canary nest is sooo cute! I wouldn't worry about the two spending more time on the floor right now. I have noticed with my babies that there are small differences in development, but they all seem to catch up by weaning time (actually, well before). As long as they are being fed, growing, and trying out new foods (isn't that fun to watch?), they are fine.

Good to hear those encouraging words. I have them in my computer room and the mom keeps calling to the cock out in the aviary. They can hear each other. I feel sorry for them, but she has a job to do right now.
I will put her back once the babies are weaned.
The two little ones get in that nest every night. I feel as if I am putting my babies to bed. So sweet they are!

i was checking up on my finches today and saw a 2nd baby in the nest. i thought the egg was infertile because only one hatched and is already 12 days old the other baby just hatched this morning and is so small compared to the other. what should i do? All the other nest have hatchlings about 12 days old and my societys stop feeding the babies around a week so i dont think the y will foster so well. should i just leave him in the nest? there is only that one other hatchling in the nest and there is plenty of room.

wow, it looks like your having challenges just like I am.
I guess that leaving it would be the best thing for now.
From all I have heard, they may not feed it with such a difference in size. Time wil tell. Keep me posted.

Sure thing, i hope he does okay. I was thinking that since i have more eggs that are suppose to hatch by this weekend maybe i would put him in with one of those nest and maybe they would feed him.
